L'ABBRACCIO

L’Abbraccio by Tommaso Arscone won at the SaturaPrize for painting. It is an example of how awards can prize talented people.
This work has the same plastic and provocative power of Mapplethorpe’s photos.
Only by reading the caption you discover that it is an oil painting. The artist has used the skin to make the most of the materiality of the subject: a sensual and reflective hug. The man portrayed from the back wraps his head with one hand, as if to retain fleeting thoughts, while the other touched his shoulder to emphasize the volume of well-defined muscles. Other two hands hold the black and nude torso. But you do not see any face. So the central theme is not “the encounter”, but rather a self-centered solitude and introspection needed in any relationship.
